What exactly is glamping?
Glamping is a combination of the words glamour and camping and was first used as such in 2005 in England and was included in the official Oxford English Dictionary in 2016.
A little history
While the term may not have been around for very long, luxury camping is timeless, as history books attest. According to Wikipedia, a Scottish earl arranged a luxury camping experience in the 16th century during the visit of King James V and his mother, with magnificent tents and a level of comfort and luxury comparable to life in his castle.
Even during this time, during a diplomatic summit between England and France, a luxurious tented camp was built, comprising over 2,500 tents, pavilions, and fountains filled with red wine. The Ottomans were no exception, creating army camps during their expeditions that required entire armies of skilled craftsmen to build and maintain.
In the 20th century, safaris in Africa became popular among wealthy Britons and Americans. However, despite their adventurous spirit, they didn't want to leave too much luxury and comfort behind, so they took everything from collapsible bathtubs to generators and large trunks filled with clothes and champagne.
Glamping today
The modern version of glamping as we know it today revolves more around spacious, beautifully furnished tents (sometimes even by famous designers), with real beds and bedding instead of sleeping bags, a well-equipped kitchen instead of a small stove, and a private, standard toilet instead of traipsing around the campsite with a toilet roll under your arm. Simply put, a more luxurious form of camping, without the full car and the hassle of constantly setting up a tent.
We've also embraced this trend, albeit in our own way, and have been creating our Cozy Cabin for you, glamping enthusiasts, for a few years now. Our Cozy Constructam Caravan with the Cabin wrapped around it... Luxury camping with a vintage twist!
